About the museum
The idea for museum in town Elhovo existed from the thirties of XX century, but became reality in 1958 after successful finalizing of the efforts of its founder Ivan Zhelyazkov. Its history has started by founding a museum collection and its first exhibition had mainly ethnographic character. In 1966 the museum was specialized as ethnographic and in 2008 its profile was extended to Ethnographic-Archaeological.
The museum is located in a border area with beautiful nature along the Valley of the Tundzha River, an area with complex and variable historic past, whose population however managed to preserve the beauty and purity of its manners and customs. It is located in two independent buildings where ethnographic and archaeological exhibitions are shown.
In the museum fund are kept more than 23 000 exhibits, among which more than 14 000 represent the main ethnographic museum fund, distributed in the following collections: ,,Agriculture and Stock-breeding”, ,,Home and residential layout” , ,,Transport, hunting and fishing”, ,,Clothing and jewelry”, ,,Fabrics and embroideries”, ,,Traditional crafts”, ,,Artistic folk art”. In its main fund “Archaeology” more than 1 000 movable cultural valuables are kept.
The museum owns over 3300 volumes of specialized literature and over 1700 items of specialized science magazines that are available for students and teachers.
Its activity is performed by 4 museum specialists.
The museum is a holder of the medakl “Cyril and Methodius” – I level and the medal “Emblem of Elhovo” – golden.
